Most smart plug failures are boring. The plug is on the wrong radio band. The app still thinks an old device exists. The lamp switch on the fixture is off. Start with those before you assume the hardware is dead.

The plug will not pair

- Confirm the wall outlet is live with a lamp you trust.
- Put the phone on the same home network you intend the plug to use, then confirm that network offers 2.4 GHz.
- Stand in the same room as the router. Pairing through two floors is a common reason a first setup fails.
- Disable a guest SSID or client isolation feature if you have one. Isolated clients cannot reach the phone during setup.
- Remove any half-created device from the app, then add it again.
- Only then use the factory reset method in the manual, usually a pin hole or a long press until an LED blinks in a stated pattern.
The plug pairs, then drops offline
A plug that works for an hour and then shows offline is often at the edge of Wi-Fi coverage. Move it closer for a night. If it stays online near the router and fails in the original room, you found a radio problem, not an app problem.
Mesh systems sometimes park a plug on a 5 GHz band it cannot use. Force 2.4 GHz on that SSID or create a dedicated 2.4 GHz name for older devices. Reboots of the router after firmware updates can also leave plugs stranded until they time out and reconnect. Give them a few minutes before you reset.
Zigbee and Z-Wave plugs that drop offline usually need a healthier mesh: more always-on devices, fewer metal cabinets, a hub that is not in a closet far from the plug.
Schedules do not fire
Check three clocks. The phone, the app account, and the plug firmware can disagree after travel or a daylight-saving change. Set the home timezone explicitly in the platform app.
Then check the lamp. If the fixture switch is off, the plug can close its relay and nothing visible happens. Leave the fixture switch on and let the plug own the schedule.
Conflicting routines are next. Two automations that both claim the same plug, or a voice routine plus a vendor schedule, will look like a broken timer. Disable all but one schedule until it behaves.
Voice control ignores the plug
The platform may see the device under a different name than the one you speak. Rename it to a short noun you will actually say. Avoid numbers and room names that sound like other devices.
Skills and bridges expire. If the plug depends on a vendor skill, open that skill and reconnect the account. Matter devices should be added in the platform app, not only in a vendor app, if you want Siri, Google, or Alexa to keep finding them. Details live in the compatibility guide.
The plug feels warm
Warm after a lamp has been on is common. Hot, smelly, or discolored is not. Unplug it. Inspect the receptacle. If the wall plate is browned or the blades are loose in the socket, stop using that outlet until it is repaired.

The neighboring socket is dead
Some plugs are wide enough to cover the second socket even when they do not electrically disconnect it. Try the other orientation if the design allows it. If you need both sockets every day, a slimmer body or an in-wall smart outlet is the cleaner fix.
When to replace the plug
Replace it if reset procedures no longer change the LED pattern, if it cycles on and off without a schedule, or if it has seen moisture it was not listed for. Do not keep resetting a device that has already browned a plate. The receptacle may need attention more than the app does.
Common mistakes
People treat the plug as a universal adapter for every cord in the house. That is how routers go dark, heaters overheat a relay, and duplex outlets lose their second socket. Limit the first month to lamps, fans, chargers, and seasonal lights. Expand only when those four are calm.
Another mistake is stacking control layers. A smart plug, a smart speaker routine, a vendor schedule, and a fixture switch all claiming the same lamp will look like random behavior. Pick one owner for on and off. Leave the fixture switch on. Keep a single schedule until that schedule is boring.
A third mistake is buying for a platform you do not actually use. A Matter badge is useful if you might change assistants. It is wasted money if you only ever speak to one speaker and you already know that speaker’s catalog. Match the radio to the house you have this year.
A fourth mistake is ignoring the physical outlet. Loose receptacles, painted-over plates, and shared power strips change heat and contact quality. If the plug wiggles, fix the receptacle. No firmware update will tighten a worn socket.

Households that disliked the first plug usually disliked bulk or unreliability, not the idea of a schedule. Those households should look at in-wall outlets or smart switches rather than a second bulky adapter.
Keeping the device boring on purpose
The best outcome is that you stop thinking about the plug. The lamp behaves. The app is a backup, not a hobby. That is the opposite of a dashboard full of tiles. If you find yourself opening the vendor app daily to fix the same drop, treat that as a defect in placement or in the radio plan, not as a need for more scenes.
Revisit the setup after a season change. Sunset times move. Holiday lights come down. A fan goes into a closet. Remove schedules that point at devices that have left the room. Stale automations are how people decide the whole category is unreliable.
LED language without a decoder ring
Manuals describe blink patterns as if everyone memorizes them. You do not have to. Photograph the LED during a failure and compare it with the one page in the booklet that shows pairing versus reset versus error. If the booklet is missing, search only for the exact model plus “reset” and stop when you have one procedure. Trying five procedures from five forums stacks states you cannot see.
After any reset, wait for the plug to obtain a DHCP address before you judge it offline. Some cheap modules need a minute. Rapid add-delete-add cycles in the app during that minute create duplicate ghosts that look like a broken device.
If two plugs in the same room fail the same way, suspect the access point, not a manufacturing plot. Swap in a lamp on a known good plug if you have one. Isolation is faster than replacing hardware in bulk.
A closing checklist
Write the model name, the printed amp rating, the room, and the assistant path on a note in your password manager or on paper in a drawer. Future you will not remember which app owns the device. When something fails in six months, that note is the difference between a five-minute fix and a new account you did not need.
Recheck the outlet seasonally. Heat, humidity, and furniture that slowly slides back against a protruding plug all change the physical setup. Unplug the module, look at the blades, look at the receptacle, and plug it back in only if both still look ordinary.
If you outgrow plugs, that is success. It means you know which circuits deserve an in-wall device or a switch. It does not mean the first plug was a mistake. It was a test that produced a map of the house.
