A smart plug can cut waste when a device would otherwise sit powered for hours you do not need. It cannot invent efficiency that the appliance does not have. The honest question is not “How much will I save?” The honest question is “What does this device cost to run, and how many hours can I actually remove?”
The numbers below are estimates. Electricity rates change by region and season. Nameplate watts are not the same as real-time draw. The only formula you need

Daily energy in kilowatt-hours is watts times hours, divided by 1000. Daily cost is that result times your rate per kWh.
Example: a 60W lamp on for 5 hours at $0.16 per kWh.
60 × 5 = 300 watt-hours. 300 / 1000 = 0.30 kWh. 0.30 × 0.16 = about $0.05 that day.
Monthly cost is roughly that daily figure times 30. Yearly cost is the daily figure times 365, but only if the schedule stays that consistent. It rarely does.
Where a plug can reduce hours
The plug does not lower watts. It lowers hours, or it prevents idle hours after you forgot the device. That is why lamps, chargers, and decorative lights are better candidates than a refrigerator. A refrigerator must stay on. A lamp does not.
Idle draw is the quiet part. Many chargers, speakers, and control boxes use a few watts all day while they wait. A few watts look small until you multiply by 24 hours and several devices. A plug that cuts that idle path overnight is doing real, modest work.

Those yearly figures are small. They are also honest. A plug that costs $15 to $30 may take more than a year to offset on a single lamp. The better case for buying one is convenience and habit, with a little less waste as a side effect.
If someone promises double-digit monthly savings from one plug on a lamp, they are mixing in other devices or using an unusually high rate. Ask for the watts and the hours.
Energy monitoring is still an estimate
Some plugs report watts in the app. That reading can help you notice a device that draws more than its sticker suggests. It is not a utility-grade meter. Firmware, power-factor assumptions, and cheap sensors all add error. Use the in-app number to compare two states of the same device, not to argue with your electric bill.
What not to automate for savings
Space heaters, window air conditioners, and similar high-watt appliances dominate a bill because the watts are large. Putting them on a cheap plug is the wrong kind of clever. The savings, if any, come from running the appliance less, which you can also do from the appliance’s own controls. The risk is heat at a small relay.
Always-on network gear is another poor savings target. Cutting power to a router or a hub every night can save a little and cost you a house that forgets all of its devices at 7 a.m.
How to run your own estimate
- Read watts from the appliance label. If it lists amps instead, multiply amps by 120 in a typical US home for a rough watt figure.
- Watch the device for three days and write down hours of actual use.
- Decide how many of those hours are unnecessary.
- Apply the formula with your real rate from a recent bill.
- Compare that yearly difference with the price of the plug. If convenience is the reason you still want it, that is a valid reason. Just do not call it a rebate.
A note on vampire power
Idle loads are real. They are also easy to oversell. A 2W phone cube left in the wall for a year at $0.16/kWh is about $3. A smart plug that itself draws a little power to stay online will eat part of that $3. The best outcome is that you stop thinking about the plug. The lamp behaves. The app is a backup, not a hobby. That is the opposite of a dashboard full of tiles. If you find yourself opening the vendor app daily to fix the same drop, treat that as a defect in placement or in the radio plan, not as a need for more scenes.
